Plankton is a fish feed giving an indication of the richness of fishspecies and their numbers in that part of the ocean. It is an ocean fertiliser natural in origin (eg unlike others as ammoniumnitrate). Its variation in abundance shows what parts of the ocean are in more need of protection. Plankton is richer near landsurfaces (trough soil runoff carrying nutrients, …). It is especially rich near river mouths.
Dimethyl sulfoxide, abbreviated DMSO, is an atmospheric reaction product of oceanic plankton gas emission. When rain falls, liquid DMSO is distributed globally, absorbed by all foliage plants and embedded in the frame substance. The amazing variety of effects of Dimethyl sulfoxide was researched extensively by medical and natural scientist groups during the years after the discovery of its therapeutic qualities in 1965.
The amount of data obtained for this natural substance, which temporarily appeared to be forgotten, is very remarkable and was published in tens of thousands of articles in journals and specialized books.
In both alternative and classical medicine, Dimethyl sulfoxide is approved as an anti-inflammatory and regulative tissue regeneration remedy. In particular, it is applied for inflammation, pain relief, injuries, disturbed blood flow, infection and also metabolic, cardiovascular and neurological diseases. The especially repairing effects on damaged tissue also make DMSO very useful for cosmetic treatments, such as the correction of scar tissues.
There are various reasons why this inexpensive product was out of the broad therapeutic awareness for several years. Dimethyl sulfoxide, more a global therapeutic principal than an individual remedy, will receive more attention once we fully comprehend its effects and get to know its practical uses.
Effects
DMSO is a small-molecular substance with a very simple structure and therefore its therapeutical diversity is all the more astonishing. The proven effects of DMSO are as follows: quick penetration of biological membranes, possibly under entrainment of other substances, elimination of free radicals, encouragement of the function of the parasympathetic nervous system, pain relief, muscle relaxation and vascular expansion, tissue regeneration, anticoagulation, immune modulation. This list can be extended further. Even though such a wide range of desirable attributes of an individual remedy may surprise us, it is important to understand that nearly all of them can be traced back to the interaction of DMSO with water. Water is the determining factor for biological-chemical-physical processes in the body, as all structures such as enzymes, membranes and organelles functionally rely on an intact, clearly structured and well-ordered shell water on their surfaces, which makes such exchange reactions possible in the first place. DMSO and water molecules have a special attraction to each other, based on electrostatic effects, as these are in both cases the so-called Dipoles. We can justifiably speak of a “molecular couple” and do not need any complex equipment to prove it. Put a few drops of each liquid in your palm and you will immediately feel the attraction and interaction between water and DMSO, which leads to a surprising and immediately noticeable release of energy. In this regard, let’s remember that by definition, our organism is an aqueous solution – consisting of more than 50% water. From a scientific point of view, this resulting release of energy on the material particle level is the structuring or modulation of information.
The principal effect of DMSO can be seen in the re-informing interaction with aqueous structures of biological systems, a fact that makes this substance a comprehensive channel opener. Other effects of DMSO, such as the increase of oxygen saturation or capturing of hydroxyl radicals, are based on the participation of metabolic processes, in the form of biochemical reactions. Furthermore, DMSO is a substrate-supplying substance in terms of organic sulfur which can be readily utilized.
Supply
DMSO is beside its official status as a medicinal product also known as a readily available solvent. That means that on the one hand we can buy it in a pharmacy, whereas in Germany a solution over 15% DMSO content such as in gels or creams is subject to prescription. On the other hand we can also buy pharmaceutical grade DMSO very easily at a chemical wholesaler or at one of the numerous internet shops directly supplied by them. According to manufacturer information, a certification in conformity with pharmaceutical standards can only be attained with the synthetically produced type. Naturally extracted DMSO of lignans, which results from paper manufacturing, can contain residues of harmful production additives. Sterile DMSO ready-to-use solutions for infusions and injections in 50 ml vials can be obtained at a pharmacy in Saarbrücken if a (private) medical prescription is presented.
Practical Application
The practical use of DMSO is possible internally and externally, whereas internally it can be taken orally as a drinkable solution or in the form of infusions or injections. For external DMSO application, suitable dilutions with water or preparations such as cream or gel can be applied on damaged or painful skin areas.

Rubbing the skin with DMSO solutions can also be used to transport effective dosages of it into the body, as it is effectively absorbed into the skin and rapidly dispersed throughout the organism. Due to its transport or taxi capacity for other small molecular substances, DMSO is not only used by itself, but is also often used in combination with further alternative remedies by mixing the substances or applying/administering them at the same time.
The six application rules:
For the practical use of DMSO, six simple rules should be followed:
- Storage: DMSO has to be stored at room temperature.
- No contact with synthetic materials: If possible there should be no contact between DMSO and synthetic surfaces during storage, measurement and application.
- Concentration: DMSO is not applied in undiluted form. It should be diluted with water first.
- Cleanliness: When used externally, the skin has to be cleansed first.
- Skin irritations: The typical tingling, itching or burning sensation during external application can be stopped at any time by washing the affected skin.
- Odour development: Depending on the quantity applied, a sulfide smell in the exhaled breath may be clearly noticed and is due to metabolic processes.
To 1.) DSMO liquefies at a room temperature of over 18,5 °C. Should it be stored in a colder place, it becomes solid in the bottle and is not ready for immediate use. It must then be liquefied again in a water bath /bain-marie or on a heater.
To 2.) DMSO interacts with synthetic surfaces of all sorts, including furniture varnishes, PVC flooring, synthetic leather, synthetic fiber textiles etc. Often these materials are quickly dissolved – stains and discolorations occur. Even worse, when DMSO is kept in plastic measuring or storage containers, it dissolves out the plasticizers, colors and production additives they contain. Certainly no one wants to have such substances on one’s skin or in the digestive tract or bloodstream. Therefore, application aids made of glass, porcelain or metal should be used. An exception is the so-called HD-Polyethylene, a plastic material which is produced without plasticizers. Bottles made of HDPE are therefore suitable for the storage of DMSO.
To 3.) Dimethyl sulfoxide can be bought in open bottles, normally as a 99,8% pure substance. However, it is applied in the form of dilutions in the range of approx. 75 % (for example externally on the foot) down to 1% (for eye drops). Exceptions are the spot application of pure DMSO on warts, aphthae, furuncles, etc. by means of a wooden cotton swab. All dilutions can be easily prepared by oneself. The easiest way is to use pure water. However, using the well-known magnesium chloride parent solution or brine has proven to be very effective. To achieve this, 35 grams of magnesium salt (MgCl2 – Hexahydrate) must be dissolved in one liter of water. This parent solution then serves as dilution liquid for DMSO.
Example: You want to prepare for external use on the elbow joint a 60% DMSO solution. You therefore mix in a glass 6 portions of DMSO with 4 portions of this magnesium chloride solution. Measuring is most easily done with a metal teaspoon or scale markings on the glass. The smallest possible amount can be achieved mixing single drops of both liquids, for instance in a porcelain eggcup. This is recommended for individual application on wounds or also for ear or nose drops. From many practical user experiences, the following concentrations for various treatment objectives have proven effective:
75% externally on feet/legs as well as for the selected application on warts, aphthae, furuncles and so on;
50% externally on body, arms, throat;
25% externally on the face or head and also as ear or nose drops or mouth rinse;
15% in a sterile form for subcutaneous or intramuscular injections;
1% as eye drops.
These recommendations can only be a rough guideline, as DMSO is perceived very differently by individuals, especially on the outer skin. One should therefore try different dilution levels in order to find the most effective and agreeable solution for oneself.
Should a DMSO solution be perceived as “too strong”, water can be sprayed on the area afterwards or the skin area can be washed with a wet cotton towel or cleaned under running water. Thereby, the dilution is increased or the further penetration of DMSO into the skin is simply interrupted..
To 4.) Prior to external application, it should be ensured that no irritation-causing substances are on the skin. Ingredients in cosmetics, sunscreen products, lotions, colors, medical creams/balms, etc. could be transported by DMSO into deeper tissue and cause lasting skin problems.
To 5.) Depending on the concentration of the DMSO solutions used externally – as it is a capillaries dilating medium – skin redness, tingling, dryness etc. can occur. These may vary but are reversible. If a certain concentration causes an excessive “burning sensation”, it can easily be washed off and re-applied with a lower concentration. Should the skin get chapped after several applications, since DMSO also transports the natural oils of the skin inwards, treatment should be interrupted and the skin cared for with a nurturing aloe vera or natural plant oil.
To 6.) The typical odour development that appears with all types of applications is caused by the reduction of the DMSO to Dimethyl sulfide (DMS), which is exhaled through the lungs. At the same time, from a biochemical point of view, an oxygen atom within the metabolism is “gained”, so that in this case DMSO acts as an oxygen supplier. The extent of this process and consequently indirectly the extent of the odour development depends on the initial physical condition of the user. DMSO smells “oyster-like”, but is also described as garlic- or vegetable-like. The odour disappears approx. 2 days after the last application.
Combination alternatives
DMSO can be combined with all known alternative remedies as it has an excellent solubility. This can be done either directly by mixing it before use or indirectly by parallel but time-delayed application. Even the parallel synergistic use in therapy fields such as acupuncture, osteopathy, frequency therapy, myofascial methods, shock waves, hypnosis, hyperthermia, homeopathy, and even in spiritual, meditative healing, is described in many experience reports as enriching and intensifying.
Recommended Dosage
The question posed during external application is not the gram dosage, but the concentration of the liquid to be applied. The water-diluted solutions should be tolerated well on the skin and then can be applied in any quantity.
When using it internally, a standard value of 0,1 gram per Kilogram body weight can be considered to be effective. That means that a person weighing 70 kg can expect a noticeable effect when using approx. 7 grams of DMSO (ca. 2,5 teaspoons). In clinical studies, up to ten times this amount was administered daily.
Conclusion
DMSO is a holistically effective channel opener. It induces in a surprisingly harmonic way the regulation and renewal of metabolic processes, tissue function and cellular immune performance. Other remedies or therapy methods can also be intensified by a simultaneous application of DMSO. Finally, we can observe that also mental spiritual growth impulses or internal perceptions can be facilitated by DMSO.
Many feedback and testimony reports from professional and private DMSO users truly amaze me again and again. While observing this substance’s effects on us and in us individually, we unlock its possibilities and are continually inspired to find new uses for it.
