Color effect through colored food
For humans and animals, eating and drinking colours is very beneficial. Nature gives us these colours partly in fruits, roots, salads, vegetables, and spices. The powers of the red colour are for example in strawberries, cherries, red currants, raspberries, in red beets, radishes, red grapes, apples, red plums, tomatoes, red pepper, etc. When the skin of the fruit or vegetable is of red colour, it must be eaten uncooked. The colours orange-red, we eat in oranges, carrots etc. Yellow is found in lemons, yellow grapes, yellow pears, egg yolks, bananas, saffron, etc. We enjoy green in all green salads, vegetables and fruits. We find blue in blueberries, red cabbage, blue grapes, poppy seeds, etc.
In cases of illness, colour eating is especially important, but only as raw food. Through cooking the colour loses its power, its effect is lost. Artificial ingredients, which are supposed to preserve the colour, are more harmful than useful.
It is also interesting to observe how the colour of the animals changes through colour influence. For example, if bullfinches are fed continuously with hemp seeds, their plumage tends to turn black. Canaries become orange when they are fed saffron, and reddish when they are fed Spanish pepper. In the home of the parrots one understands the art of changing the plumage through food. In Japan and China, this art is practiced on ornamental fish, which are bred in splendid colour variations, according to the food recipe of the Japanese.
Such colour changes should not be confused with those that certain animals are capable of making themselves, such as the chameleon, which is generally known for this. The peculiar colour change of this animal gave rise, even in ancient times, to the idea of calling a person who skilfully adapted his views and principles to his own advantage a chameleon. However, the chameleon can only adopt a certain range of colours, with light and shadow, heat and cold, and the changing moods of the animal.
This chapter also includes the so-called “mimicry colours”, which are nature’s protective devices for plants and animals, which serve to appear unrecognisable to enemies or to mislead them by adapting their colours to their surroundings. Most insects and caterpillars, as well as frogs, worms and toads, lizards, snakes, etc. use this kind of protection.
Colours play an important role in health and illness in nature, they support living beings in their struggle for existence, act as chemicals and are closely connected with the elements which we need to live.
Colour design in connection with matter
The different colours are the result of the different density of matter. Subtler the matter, subtler are the colours. Gross the matter, gross are the colours. Radiant are the colours when impeded by subtle matter and non-radiant are they when the impeding matter is gross. The light moves in velocity and its velocity is obstructed by the matter particles. The light unobstructed by matter remains light only.
In daily life we see the colour variety everywhere. Buildings, trees, animals, all things existing in space are distinguishable only due to colour. The wall is denser in matter than the tree. The tree is denser in matter than the flower/fruit. The difference in density and weight of matter causes the difference in colour, causing the distinction of one form from the other. If matter has at all levels the same density and weight, the degree of impediment to light velocity would have remained the same. The colours, too, would have been the same all the time. But it is not so. That is why the creation is a colour movie, with sound playing at the background.
Had there been just one colour for all forms, as between all forms, we cannot move an inch, for we cannot see where the wall is and where the door is, where the path is and where the ditch is, where the man is and where the animal etc.
Colour is light in manifestation. Matter is the prism that causes variety. Sound is the conductor. Spirit or universal essence is the background.
The light, the sound vibration, the life pulsation, the thought: all move in great velocity in creation interacting with matter and mutating it constantly and incessantly. The colours of the sunrise are a message to us that colours keep changing on account of movement in nature. Colours are volatile and move in velocity.
Meditating upon colour
Two ways are there to meditate on colours. One is to observe the objective colours with objective eyes and link the mind with them. The other method is to imagine colours mentally with open or closed eyes. The second one is more powerful than the first. It leads the student directly to the buddhic plane. One colour dominates each of the planes of man.
Green governs the physical plane. This colour belongs to the planet Saturn, who keeps the lower man in bondage to matter, until his inner vehicles are hatched into consciousness. No student should meditate upon green colour unless he is specifically instructed to by his Master. Generally speaking, the meditation on green colour leads a beginner into difficulties and misfortunes.
Blood red colour belongs to the vital level. Meditating on this colour produces strong vibrations on this plane, and they cannot be controlled by the ordinary man. In every century the political emblems of revolutionary movements always carried blood-red symbols. A student of spirituality is prohibited to meditate upon this colour unless prescribed by his Master.
Violet belongs to the etheric plane. It is very difficult to meditate on violet. If the student meditates in the desired manner upon the blue colour, he gets hold upon the violet colour and easily controls the ethers of his vital body. Such a process gives a speedy mastery over the whole vital body. Meditating on blue in the morning and on orange in the evening causes an ideal progress to the student. Orange stimulates the action of the etheric body and removes congestion of Prana.
Rose belongs to the astral plane and works favourably upon the nervous system. It vitalises the nerves and removes nervous debility. It also increases the will to live. When a patient of suicidal tendencies is kept in a room of rose colour, he will be healed. If a student has any nervous weakness by birth, he should start colour meditation with rose. If he is too argumentative, he should start the meditation with orange. If he is too sensuous or materialistic, he should start the meditation with blue.
Golden Yellow leads us to the higher nature of man. A meditation on this colour brings the splendour of attracting a conducive environment and arranging the lower vehicles by following good habits of food and drink.
Honey colour belongs to the highest order of meditation, since it is the colour of the pure Buddhic plane. It gives a happy blend of all the activity of the lower vehicles
Orange, yellow, rose and honey are the only safe colours that can be meditated on by any beginner without the aid of a teacher.
Green can be meditated on by anyone who takes to the art of healing. If one is completely service-minded and if he has no loathing for the appearance and odours of patients, he is soon benefitted in Yoga by meditating on the green colour in his throat centre. Loathing, fearing, shunning or hating the disagreeable smell or appearance of a patient, causes a serious disturbance to the vital and mental bodies.
This disturbance is called Psora by Samuel Hahnemann who is the founder of the Homoeopathic system of healing. Meditation on green subjects a man of Psora to all contagious diseases. It is very risky to meditate on this colour before a student becomes a spiritual helper through medicine and nursing.
Black is the one colour which should not be meditated on by the student at any stage except in very rare cases. The element carbon emanates this colour and carbon is an enemy to the vital force. Vital force belongs to the physical sun ray and black belongs to the stage of “sunset” to vitality. Oxygen brings the energy of Sun as Life, while carbon hinders and decomposes it into death.
If we carefully meditate on the higher principles of colour, we can see that colour is the cause of forms. Only through colour does our eye perceive the shapes of objects.
Thus, a noble harmony prevails in all living things and imposes its laws on the living form. Its secrets are of an unfathomable depth, they reveal a wealth of discoveries.
