A refined understanding of the needs of the body is imperative in the present day context. The demands of the body in terms of drink and food and also in terms of its other appetites shall have to be carefully noticed. Such demands shall have to be duly honored in so far as they are not contrary to the general well-being of the person. Denial of such demands could cause a dent in the psyche, resulting in certain deficiencies, leading to sicknesses. Sometimes, a saint may get an impulse to smoke a cigar! Wise as he is, he does it and does away with it. He does not let the thought to come again and again by just fulfilling once a queer demand. By throwing a crumb at the crow or a stray animal, it satisfies itself, it would not return again and again.
Likewise, pregnant women have strange demands for taste and food. They would like a piece of raw mango or a sour food item. They express from time to time, desire to eat things which they do not normally and regularly eat. The ancient Egyptians and the Indians till date honor such demands of the pregnant women. Health researchers rarely study these strange demands and trace deficiencies of the pregnant women. The physicians of the old had an understanding of the possible, mineral deficiencies that happen in pregnancy and were strongly recommending that the instinctual food and drink desires of the pregnant women be honored. Seldom pregnant women were treated with medicines of any kind, lest, they may have an impact on the growing child in the womb. The mothers were never treated with medicines even during post-delivery times to prevent the impact of the medicine on the child through the milk that it draws from the mother. Such of these old traditions may have to be studied in right perspective so that the patients as well as the physicians would notice and honor the call from within the body.
It is of common knowledge that sometimes patients, during their sickness strongly desire certain foods. In so far as supply of such foods is not harmful, the patients should be supplied with. A satisfied psyche generates enough healing energies from within to assist the cure that is being attempted by the physician. The positive cooperation of the patient’s psyche is a significant factor in cures. The patients cannot be treated en masse with standardized procedures and structures. After all, every human is unique and therefore requires the needed personal attention.
Today, in business and marketing, the professionals think of customizing the product as per the individual taste of the customer. It should much more be so in matters of food, health and medicine. Many times a patient is better off with marginal transmissions now and then than a patient who regiments himself with the given instructions. A little freedom always adds to boost up the psyche which in turn contributes to the process of healing.
