The process of daily sleep and the process of dying are identical with one difference. In sleep the magnetic thread or the current of life force is preserved intact and constitutes the path of return to the body. In the process of death the life thread is broken or snapped. When the life thread is broken the conscious entity cannot return into the physical body. In sleep the awareness is already functioning elsewhere while the life principle continues to keep the coherence of the body. In the sleep hours we die to the physical plane and are alive, functioning elsewhere. Every night while at sleep the awareness moves out while the body is maintained by the life principle. Regularly the thread of awareness moves out. It is a daily practice that awareness knows. Ordinary men cannot bring back to their physical brain consciousness the recollection of their passing out and their reentry.
Death after all is only a long interval in the life of physical plane functioning. One ‘goes abroad’ for a longer period in the event of death while in the sleep he does so for a short period. But, the process of daily sleep and the process of periodical dying are identical, except that the magnetic thread of life remains intact in the body during the sleep hours. Therefore, process of withdrawal of the awareness principle during the sleep hours shall have to be carefully observed and even followed during the time of getting into sleep. The withdrawal of awareness principle in the body shall have to closely pursued by the one like a spy following his object of pursuit. In yoga discipline this is given as an essential step for conscious withdrawal from the body, to consciously know where else the awareness is functioning.
Study of dreams and study of sleep have vital importance since in either case there is the withdrawal of awareness principle from the physical body. As much as withdrawal is pursued before sleep hours so much the arrival is also pursued during the semi conscious state before the total awakening. Observing the exit while entering into sleep and the entry of the principle of awareness while reentering the body is of vital importance to understand the myth of death.
Death for the average man is a cataclysm. Since it involves termination of all human relations and the cessation of all physical activity, it also involves severing of all feelings of love and of affection. It is also dreaded because one does not know where he is moving into. Is it not wise that men hold on to them. The temporary nature of all human relations and the much more temporary dimension of things and places that one loves shall have to be recollected from time to time not to get stuck with the surroundings. The philosophy informs that each one of is but a traveler and that things come to pass by. Places and events come to pass by, persons entrain, travel along for a while and detrain. The hard reality is we come alone and leave alone. Therefore, relate to the persons and events holding in consciousness, “all come to pass by”.
Every arrival of a person is associated with departure. Everything that comes also carries in it the time for passing by. The traveler is all alone, he gathers people, he gathers things and articles, and he gathers comforts and pleasures while discomforts and displeasures also come along. The truth is that he has come alone into this world and he will pass away all alone from this world. If this wisdom is held at the back of the mind departures and disassociations do not pain much. But men are illusioned. They tend to forget that all things pass by. For this reason to transcend death one should hold on to the wisdom of temporal dimension of physical life. It should always be held. It is a dictum. After all, even the body is formed around him and grows to its optimum only to decay thereafter and disintegrate. Even body is a temporal dimension. This philosophy holds good for those who wish to transcend death or consciously die/depart.
Death is but departure from one state to another.
