2. Concentration Difficulties
Ferrum phosphoricum (Iron Phosphate)
To learn by heart is not his forte
Latin and other subjects are not exactly what the Ferrum phosphoricum-pupil likes. He is small, ambitious and does not like to learn vocabulary by heart. Also, he does not understand grammar completely. Eventually, he gets a “five” in the interim report and he has lots of material which he has to catch up with.
The Ferrum phosphoricum-pupil is inclined to neglect certain subjects and suddenly he is way behind that it seems almost impossible to catch up with the missed learning material. His situation is desperate. He already had difficulties to keep up with the normal learning material and to use what he has learned in his homework. His brain is not the fastest. Often the parents have to explain laboriously at home the lessons again.
In the course of time there is more and more material which he has not correctly integrated. Actually, he needs double the time of the rest of the class in order to use it correctly. In the beginning the missed material is so little that it is underestimated. He believes he can do it. But at the latest when being confronted with the final notes it becomes critical for the Ferrum phosphoricum pupil.
In the negative condition he is lazy and learns irregularly. He is confronted with a mountain of material which he has to catch up with. His comprehension ability is slow.
Ferrum phosphoricum helps him to learn a lot in a short period of time.
In a positive condition he knows he can do it. As soon as he sits down to learn the function of his brain increases. He is precise which very much facilitates his learning. His basic feeling is: “I start it and I can make it. I read a book and I keep it in mind and understand it.” If the student has difficulties to get into this condition, Ferrum phosphoricum helps him to solve the task. It is astonishing how quickly the huge quantity of work disappears within a short period of time after he has taken the remedy. The lower the potency the more often he has to repeat the dosage, once to twice a day. (One dose of e C200 is recommended, also when doing physical work which demands precision.)

Here is a story from the homeopathic fairy tale treasure:
Father and mother sit together with their Potassium phosphoricum child and think about the future. The final exams should be good because the parents want to send their child to a university to America. If the child achieves the required notes there would be the possibility to receive a stipend.
Potassium phosphoricum is a good pupil, industrious and willing to learn.
Also, his extra-curricular efforts in sports and playing the harp are excellent.
Together, they think about how to improve the support for the Potassium phosphoricum pupil.
The mother explains his siblings, “Potassium phosphoricum needs a lot of quite for learning, so please don’t disturb him.” Everybody nods understandingly.
The father says his brain needs a lot of food for the nervous system.
Mother: “I have a supply of good almonds. Twice daily he gets a big glass of almond milk with sunflower honey. I will also make almond halva for him.”
Father: “Prepare his favorite food so that he enjoys learning.”
Mother: “But certainly, pancakes, Kaiserschmarrn (Austrian dessert), nice cakes, fried potatoes and cheese casserole — I already planned.”
Father: “I believe that everything will work out fine, Potassium phosphoricum. I already look forward to the time when you pass your tests with excellence.”
For four months Potassium phosphoricum studies like a world champion day and night. He has reduced sleep to a minimum. Three days before the test Potassium phosphoricum is totally desperate. He cannot remember anything of what he has learned. For the parents it is a shock. They have invested so much hope into their child.
The parents only wanted the best for their child. So the child was stuffed with sweets. Furthermore, movements were reduced to zero and the additional lack of sleep did not give the brain any possibility to regenerate itself. During the course of time everything was blocked.
Now everything learned disappeared into the subconscious and the brain does not have any strength to recall it when needed. You can simply cry. All hopes are destroyed. In desperation the mother calls a homeopath as a last straw. “A catastrophe has happened,” close to tears. The homeopath asks some questions about nutrition during the last weeks. Then he gives her eight tablets of Potassium phosphoricum D6. “Give him one tablet every two hours. He probably does not need more than six and during the next days he only gets vegetable soup to eat and for drinking only pure water.”
“Water”, mother cries out indignantly. “Our son does not like to drink water at all!”
“Then he doesn’t drink anything until he gets thirsty. As an exception allow him a glass of freshly pressed pomegranate in the morning. Now he should not study anymore. He has studied enough. He should go into fresh air and move around and has distractions. This evening he will have a healing sleep. And he will sleep from 12 to 14 hours uninterrupted. After this don’t give him any further Potassium phosphoricum-tablets. Then he is healed and will remember everything.” It happened exactly this way and the Potassium phosphoricum-pupil passed his test with high honors.

The bored one
The bored, easily distracted pupils come home after school. His mother asks him: “How was school?” He answers: “Boring as always.”
The next day he is asked during chemistry lessons: “Can you tell us something about Potassium sulfuricum?”
“What is so special about Potassium sulfuricum? It consists of two elements – potassium and sulfur. Otherwise it is boring stuff without sense and purpose.” The teacher conveys to his pupils the practicable application possibilities. “No, this material is a homoeopathic remedy and is not boring at all.” But the pupil who could be helped by Potassium sulfuricum is always bored. This is a main aspect of this remedy. It is self-evident that you as a Potassium sulfuricum pupil is bored by everything. At our school the abilities of the pupils are not developed separately from practical life. But we look for the creative in life and each pupil expresses his individual possibilities.
Potassium sulfuricum pupils are unfortunately easily distracted. This could be a dragonfly which flies by a window or a piece of paper which flutters to the ground. All this awakens his curiosity, reminds him of something alive and his attention flies there immediately. In all things where he feels life his concentration is excellent. The learning material being filled with life fascinates him. Homework is a horror to him because the dry material which he already did not like at school he has to rehash again. If the telephone rings while doing homework he immediately jumps up and forgets his duties. The Potassium sulfuricum pupil should not look at the learning material as a duty but as an integral part of his life. The teachers help him to get to know the living structures of different subjects and subject matter instead of overloading him with hypotheses and abstract thought patterns. Especially, mathematics fascinates him as the purest science.
In the positive condition

Lycopodim (Clubmoss)
The know-it-all
Also the Lycopodium pupil is bored. He only thinks of free time or break. When is the boring lesson finally over? A dominant teacher who does not pay attention to the feelings of the pupils can despite the willingness of the pupil create great difficulties for him. On the whole the Lycopodium pupil absorbs a lot of material during the lessons despite of his lack of concentration. In contrast to the Calcium carbonicum pupil he can absorb the lessons well even though he is distracted. There have to be profound loopholes before he gets panic attacks in mathematics for example. Basically, he can have difficulties in each subject. A good teacher can motivate him for every subject and awaken the sleeping ambition. His special problems are in orthography. Despite greatest efforts he always makes the same mistakes. When writing he forgets letters, writes them twice or forgets the last letters of a word. Tuberculinum (Cattle-TBC-nosode)
The teacher is on the Black List.
The Tuberculinum-pupil only understands the learning material when he has heard it several times, preferably in variations. In addition he needs a summary at the end. In addition to that he can get problems with the teacher due to his stubbornness which makes it even more difficult to understand the learning material. The personality of the Tuberculinum-pupil is described more closely in the chapter “Fear of School”.

Syphilinum (Syphilis-nosode)
A burnt child dreads the fire
The Syphilinum child is not able to concentrate because his brain cannot focus on one subject. It is almost already an unreasonable demand that the child is asked to sit on his chair. But at school he has no other choice. His thoughts are busy with all things which he could do instead. Therefore, he often could not understand the simplest context and calculations, let alone execute them. At home the child prefers to do anything else rather than his homework. A certain restlessness is in him and does not allow him to fulfill the real tasks.
He is even willing to duties in or outside the house just so he does not have to study. The parents have to use up of energy so the child does his homework.
His motto is:
“Think with the heart!”
Tabacum (Tobacco plant)
Made nebulous by smoke
Tabacum is important for children whose parents are or were smokers. It can also cause a blockade if the “well chosen” means do not work satisfactory.
A child has a certain passivity, self-betrayal or weakness of will. He cannot muster the strength to learn and even knows that he actually should do it. This is procrastinated until he cannot avoid it anymore. The last decision to start working with things as well as to finish them is lacking. In the classroom similar things happen. The child wants to concentrate on the subject but he cannot gather his strength. Therefore, he listens to everything but the real understanding is missing. “Not by any stretch of the imagination I can concentrate.”
His motto is:
“Be merciful with yourself!”
Alcohol
The dull gaiety
In the families where it is habitually to drink or where there was alcoholism this remedy can often be helpful, at least to show a way to other means.
The alcohol child does not have any connection to the learning material. He needs a certain attunement. His heart has to open and he has to feel the thrill how beautiful it could be to learn more about it.
If, for example, the teacher tells a story: “Christopher Columbus was an intelligent and very gifted person. When he wanted to demonstrate his leading power to the sailors he took an egg and asked who can make this egg stand up on the tip. When all tried in vain, he banged hard enough on the table and naturally it stood up in its tip. This little demonstration impressed the sailors…”
…then the child which needs alcohol as remedy is equally impressed.
Small interesting remarks or stories enlighten the heart and totally fascinate it. Otherwise, the taught material is only barely digested. He can only start his homework if you tell some small funny stories or tell a joke.
