§ 288 – Sixth Edition
“I find it yet necessary to allude here to animal magnetism, as it is termed, or rather Mesmerism (as it should be called in deference to Mesmer, its first founder) which differs so much in its nature from all other therapeutic agents. This curative force, often so stupidly denied and disdained for a century, acts in different ways. It is a marvellous, priceless gift of God to mankind by means of which the strong will of a well intentioned person upon a sick one by contact and even without this and even at some distance, can bring the vital energy of the healthy mesmerizer endowed with this power into another person dynamically (just as one of the poles of a powerful magnetic rod upon a bar of steel).
It acts in part by replacing in the sick whose vital force within the organism is deficient here and there, in part also in other parts where the vital force has accumulated too much and keeps up irritating nervous disorders it turns it aside, diminishes and distributes it equally and in general extinguishes the morbid condition of the life principle of the patient and substitutes in its place the normal of the mesmerist acting powerfully upon him, for instance, old ulcers, amaurosis, paralysis of single organs and so forth. Many rapid apparent cures performed in all ages, by mesmerizers endowed with great natural power, belong to this class. The effect of communicated human power upon the whole human organism was most brilliantly shown, in the resuscitation of persons who had lain some time apparently dead, by the most powerful sympathetic will of a man in full vigor of vital energy,1 and of this kind of resurrection history records many undeniable examples.
If the mesmerizing person of either sex capable at the same time of a good-natured enthusiasm (even its degeneration into bigotry, fanaticism, mysticism or philanthropic dreaming) will be empowered all the more with this philanthropic self-sacrificing performance to direct exclusively the power of his commanding good will to the recipient requiring his help and at the same time to concentrate these, he may at times perform apparent miracles.”
1 Especially of one of such persons, of whom there are not many, who, along with great kindness of disposition and perfect bodily powers, possesses but a very moderate desire for sexual intercourse, which it would give him very little trouble wholly to suppress, in whom, consequently, all the fine vital spirits that would otherwise be employed in the production of the semen, are ready to be communicated to others, by touching them and powerfully exerting the will. Some powerful mesmerisers, with whom I have become aquatinted, had all this peculiar character.
Here it is relevant to discuss something about the life-manoeuvering powers which is otherwise called ‘Mesmerism’. The founder of it is ‘Mesmer’. It is different from other methods of curing diseases. There are still some people who have heckled at this and those who argued that there is no power like this. This power works in many ways. It is a magical power and is a great gift blessed by the Almighty to the mankind. Any man of strong will and intuition can transmit this power either by touch or no touch. The vital strength in him can be passed on into others in the shape of vital energy. A strong magnet pole influences an iron piece even without touch. The same way are the powers of these methods.
It helps to fill up the gap of vital power in the body of the patient wherever required. Some patients are affected by nervous diseases due to excessive vital strength accumulated at some parts of the body. In such cases, this power can bring about equilibrium. This power can be utilized for bringing the diseased vital force to a healthy order. Many cases of carbuncles, boils, paralysis etc., when localized at a particular part of the body can be cured with the help of these powers. In ancient ages, great seers, who cured diseases with their natural strength of intuition, are of this category. The results of these forces are known, when a perfectly healthy person with strong will transmits this power through love and pious intuition into the other person. Some people, who remained as dead for some time, are made to live by this method. In such cases of rebirth, there is none to contradict. In the history, there are so many examples. Based on this, bigotry, fanaticism, mysticism or philanthropic dreaming, etc. might have degenerated. But apart from all those malefic experiments, there is some truthful existence in this method. Any man or woman of gentle nature can conduct this. Enthusiastic people with devotion and self-surrender can experiment this. With good intention and universal love, this power can be spread to those people, who deserve such a help. Such great people can also achieve certain magical results by concentrating their will power.
Explanation
People who realize God with universal love and with self-regulation attain certain powers naturally by awakening in themselves, the light in the vital, mental and intellectual planes. A sight, touch, speech, presence of blessings of such personalities purify the vital, mental and intellectual planes of others. By these, defects in them are neutralized. As a part of it, their diseases are also cured. This is known in India since ages. This is recognized by Westerners. They started trails for utilizing “Mesmerism”. This system is established by ‘Mesmer’. So, it is called mesmerism. Since it is new, many have heckled at it. Materialists argued with narrow vision that it is not true. In earlier centuries, Jesus Christ and his contemporary Apolonius, etc. exhibited certain magics. Since none of them are Westerners, this did not go into their brains. Dr. Hahnemann, who could visualize all this, has attained this power and with unlimited love for mankind, has cured many diseases and with that experience has given out these principles. He established that this power is regulated by the vital force and that it influences the vital plane of the patient and so it can be used for the curing diseases. He explains that boils, etc. are filled with excessive circulation of vital energy and they can be adjusted to normalcy by this intuitive process only.
In this context, he explained that the healer has to utilize the vital energy in him. Although this is also a method, it is not a correct method. By this, the physician gradually loses his vital energy and becomes a weakling. He also succumbs to diseases. Besides this, there is another method i.e. bringing the Divine Light in him into the Aura of his vital force, by touching the organs of the body mentally. In this method one must learn to feel and meditate the patient also as one of the incarnations of God. Besides curing diseases, the strength of the doctor does not diminish or go waste; on the other hand it increases.
