Fever Cramps
The following are most important remedies for fever cramps except Belladonna, as it was already described under flu remedies. The therapy of fever cramps should not tempt the layman to overestimate himself, but it should point out new possibilities to manage the helplessness and fear in view of a fever cramps with the help of homeopathy. The situation could also open the possibility to find new approaches with his therapist.
Dosage: The appropriate remedy is taken repeatedly in potency C 200 every five to ten minutes. If there is no improvement after two doses, the remedy is wrongly chosen.
Cicuta virosa
It is the severity of cramps, especially in meningitis, that characterizes Cicuta. The patient is often in a clear mind and then suddenly becomes delirious. He no longer recognizes anyone, can answer questions only partially and remains in this semi-conscious state.
This leads to cramps. The limbs are twitching and jerking. Particularly, the whole spine cramps. The head is stretched backwards to the opisthotonus (spasmodic stretching backwards) or to one side or moved from side to side. Cicuta is characterized by violent, terrible distortions of the limbs and the whole body. The cramps are triggered again by touch, noise or vibration. Usually, the fever starts with chills in the chest and spreads from there. The patient demands warmth (heater, hot-water bottle). The whole body is icy cold outside.
In the course of the disease, the patient tends to stare at the spot on the wall. Slowly the heat increases to the highest degree. His reddened face burns with heat and he has no thirst. He constantly demands fresh air. His belly usually sweats every night, especially towards morning, thereafter he feels invigorated and refreshed. The delirium of Cicuta is as severe as the cramps. He moans, howls, makes gestures and funny movements, sings and is in great excitement.
Hyoscyamus niger
This remedy will rarely be considered in our latitudes, as the symptoms are so alarming even before the febrile convulsions, that most people will certainly recognize their limits. On the other hand, a homeopath will usually have realized the remedy in good time ahead and given it to avert a fever cramps. The Hyoscyamus patient suffers from increasing weakness. He has relapses of severe deliriums, which do not last any longer because of his weakness. In the beginning he has more frequent relapses, later he becomes more and more comatose. In the remaining time, he is mumbling in delirium. Hyoscyamus is particularly important when diseases take to a typhoid form. His face is pale and sunken in contrast to Belladonna. He struggles with the blanket, not because it is too warm for him, but because he doesn’t want to be covered. He may even want to be completely naked. The cold starts in the feet and runs up the spine to the neck. Only with the heat comes the thirst. The skin is dry and burns noticeably with heat. The veins are full and burning. If the lungs are affected, he has a dry, crampy cough, especially at night, which gets worse in bed. It gets better by sitting up, worse by eating, drinking and talking.
Opium
Opium is characterized by an indifferent inertia. The patient is very sleepy and in a kind of dreamy dizziness. He does not complain and does not ask. Sleep is heavy, as if stupefied, numb with wheezing breathing, face red, eyes half closed, bloodshot. Skin, especially the face, is covered with hot sweat, especially during sleep. He feels the bed too hot. He cannot lie covered, is constantly looking for cool places and uncovers himself.
Stramonium
Stramonium has a very violent, sometimes directly frightening delirium: the sick person sings, laughs, grins, whistles, screams, curses or prays (asks). Above all, there is chattiness. Suddenly, he takes up the most different, most impossible positions or lifts the head again and again from the pillow. The eyes stand wide open shining with big pupils. The reddened face glows, while he is shivering. However, hands and feet are cold during the heat. Mostly, he doesn’t like darkness, but demands light and doesn’t want to be alone. When shivering, he wants to be firmly covered. This situation even lasts in the heat stage. The cramps come when the heat becomes intense.
Follow-up treatment of influenza
The heavier the flu was, the more careful the follow-up treatment should be and the patient should stick to the following recommendations. If a person has survived the flu well, the tendency to catch a cold is still there. With homeopathic aftercare, the prognosis for the patient’s future health stands and falls.
The patient treated with homoeopathy experiences a natural development of the disease in a shortened and weakened way. In allopathy, the symptoms of the disease get suppressed, so that the time to recover is prolonged by the lack of self-healing powers. Proper nutrition during convalescence can protect against a relapse. Many nervous consequences will not appear if great attention is given to diet.
Meat, alcohol, stimulants, strong spices are pure poison for the organism during recovery and, depending on the previous state of health, for at least six weeks afterwards. The following should be eaten: Grain mucilage soups, especially from oats; vegetables, rice, fruit, olive oil, fresh herbs, some cream cheese and pulses, sprouts, especially from wheat and Alfa-Alfa should form an important part of the diet. Use salt and pepper moderately. Do not add vinegar and mustard to the salad: better buttermilk, yoghurt and similar. Light puddings (especially prepared with gelatine), fruit jelly, compote and stewed or baked fruit can be eaten as dessert.
Water or the following warm drinks are best for drinking: rice-, bread-, and malt drinks as well as herbal teas (avoid chamomile and peppermint teas as they can antidote many homeopathic remedies). Cereal coffees are often strongly roasted and irritating.
Protect yourself from a relapse!
Anyone who exposes the organism too quickly against too much strain has to pay for it later. Be warned of the following dangers:
- Cold
- Not to be dressed warmly
- Draught
- Working too hard
- Mental stress
- Missing periods of rest
All this can cause a relapse or provoke severe nervous symptoms.
There are three main aspects to homeopathic aftercare:
- The symptoms that either remain after recovery or occur again. (A proper homeopathic treatment rarely leaves symptoms behind, except in case of sensitive or weaker people who cannot fully develop their self-healing powers).
- Treatment of the diseased organs.
- Antimiasmatic treatment, preferably with nosodes. Follow-up and antimiasmatic remedies are always given from medium to higher potencies. However, some remedies for the nervous symptoms have also been proven in low potencies, even in mother tincture.
- Organ-strengthening remedies are given in mother tincture up to D 3. The salts of life are mostly used from D 3 to D 12.
1. Symptomatic follow-up treatment
Care must be taken that not only organ therapy is used. Many other remedies can be used as supporting remedies, especially the basic agents or polychrests, e.g. Sepia and Sulfur:
Sepia
Sepia loses all interest in everything she (he) liked or did. Not only about work, but also about food and especially about his family.
Sulphur
He feels very weak, he would like to do a lot, but he breaks out into sweat through the slightest physical exertion. He feels warm, has little or no appetite, but mostly a lot of thirst and usually for warm drinks.
Other important remedies are:
Arsenic, Arsenic iodatum, Psorinum, Valeriana, but also: Sulfuricum iodatum, Calcium phos., Calcium carb., Sodium mur., Calcium fluor., Lathyrus, Conium, Sarcolacticum acidum.
2. Organ remedy – nerve stimulant
Muriaticum acidum
After serious illnesses, the person who needs Muriaticum falls back into an early childhood stage of development. A mental weakness appears that is reminiscent of a child. The human being is not capable of doing the simplest things. He can neither stand, walk, sit nor eat on his own and needs to be looked after the whole day. It can go so far that he even has to learn how to speak again. We find extreme mental and physical weakness.
Dosage: Mur-ac. is given both in low potencies (D 3 – D 12, 3 x daily 3 drops) and in higher potencies (C 200, 1 – 3 x daily).
Avena sativa
The Avena patient feels completely exhausted. Any mental work is impossible for him.
Dosage: The intake of oats via food is often sufficient to strengthen the body. However, if the recovery progresses too slowly, then potencies from D 3 to C 200 or as LM potency are indicated. Low potencies are repeated 4 times a day, higher potencies do not need to be repeated so often.
Scutelaria
The convalescent feels exhausted by the disease. Thinking and sleeping are very bad. Life with its demands is too much for him. Very often headache occurs during daily activities. Every time, if something more is asked of him, he gets insomnia. Due to lack of sleep, he either suffers from bilious headache or his extremely tensed nerves are discharged in a nervous breakdown. The sick person is completely beside himself and can only cry helplessly. His whole condition is purely nervous. An examination will not reveal any organic disorder.
Dosage: Scut. will mostly be used in mother tincture until D 3, 3 – 4 x daily 3 drops.
Cypripedium
We also find a nervous weakness in this drug, not as a result of excessive demands, but because of nervous excitement. The recovering person is just too excited to stop him from concentrating or sleep at night.
Dosage: Cypr. is given as low as Scutelaria.
Liver stimulant:
Chelidonium, Carduus marianus, Hydrastis, Taraxacum, Berberis.
Spleen stimulant:
Ceanothus, China, Chininum arsenicosum.
Kidney stimulant:
Berberis, Solidago, Urtica urens.
Heart stimulant:
Iberis, Crataegus, Adonis.
