Brief Introduction to Homeopathy
Notes on acute anamnesis
The word ‘cold’ clearly expresses what happens in the organism, when somebody falls ill. The organism does not have enough power to continually generate the necessary heat but cools down accordingly. If the immune system still has enough reserves, catching a cold may be avoided. Under favorable conditions the body warms up again until it reaches the normal state. However, if a cold breaks out, the following considerations are important for a homeopathic treatment:
- In which season and in which weather conditions are we?
- What caused the cold? Wind, water, fog, snow etc.
- Did the cold come quickly or slowly?
- At what time of the day the symptoms are even worse?
- Is it a nasal dripping or a thick cold?
- What is the nature of the nasal secretion, the sputum, the flow of tears?
- Are the complaints better in the warm room or in the fresh air?
- Does the cough get worse when entering or leaving the house?
- What are the accompanying symptoms – pains of the limbs, ears, headache, fever, constipation, drowsiness?
- How are the thirst and the appetite? (See symptoms list)
- What does the tongue look like? (See symptoms list)
- Is the disease one-layered or multi-layered? Do the symptoms for only one remedy go through the stages of the disease or are there clear symptoms for two or more remedies? In the latter case, a miasma has ususally become active.
- Which basic type of disease are we facing? This depends on the following factors:
- The general condition of the patient
- The current strain/burden of the patient
- Any recent changes in his lifestyle and eating habits
- Change in the period of life
Dealing with the Symptoms
The more one allows the disease to develop naturally, the clearer are the symptoms and the easier is the treatment.
Sometimes one finds only one reliable symptom, for which only one remedy is suitable, since the remaining symptoms of the remedy have not yet appeared.
We may be lucky, if the patient gives us an unususal symptom, which may be very valuable at that moment. However, do not rely on a single symptom, but always use all the symptoms as a basis for repertorisation.
First, give the remedy that unites the totality of the symptoms. It can pave the way for a follow-up with a single specific symptom, and will take the patient a long way in the path of healing.
In the case of acute illnesses, one gets the most valuable symptoms by simply observing and examining. Often the patient will hardly speak or not answer, if one wants to complete the symptoms. This condition is found especially in remedies such as Arnica, Bryonia, Helleborus, Gelsemium, Opium, Zincum, and others. When treating acute illnesses, the relatives can sometimes tell us more about him than the patient himself.
Therefore, it is important to wait, until the appropriate remedy can be applied. There are some remedies, e.g. Aconite and Belladonna, which are developing rapidly, but most of them take time to constitute their own disease profiles. A premature prescription confuses the treatment and may trigger a chain reaction of misdiagnosis regarding the choice of remedy.
Miasmatic stress
Every antimiasmic constitutional treatment strengthens the organism against diseases. As far as the remedy prescription is concerned, homeopathy evaluates the hereditary risks very differently from orthodox medicine. In orthodox medicine one cannot find any evidence in the family history for the therapy. According to the conventional medicine, the only way to have a positive effect on the hereditary factor, is gene technology. While orthodox medicine is based on genetic structure in hereditary research, homeopathy refers to miasmology. Accordingly, every disease is inherited, since all humans are subject to a miasmatical burden.
In homeopathy, all diseases are assigned to certain basic diseases. The sum of ancestral diseases in a person decides which miasma is present in latent form or whether it is active. This depends on the extent to which the patient is able to attune the external circumstances with his inner development. A predispostion to a disease is generally present in every person, whereby the manifestation of the disease is usually alternating in intensity and form. The higher intelligence or life force is via the organism constantly trying to balance the external circumstances. The extent to which the life force can successfully dominate depends on the inner growth of the human being.
Disease-causing influences are subdivided into short-term and long-term influences. The short-term influences can trigger acute illnesses when the stress of them is large enough to affect the immune system. The long-term influences slowly wear-out the power of the patient and result in chronic diseases. Both influences differ only in the duration of their impact, and some belong more ore less to one category.
- Short-term influences: coldness, drafts, heat, sun, poisons, sumptuous meals, alcohol, stress, agitation, tension of expectations, etc.
- Long-term influences: habitat, lifestyle, diet, vaccinations, chronic stress, antibiotics and other medicines, constant anger, social isolation, etc.
The external influences can be very virulent, but they are always secondary to the internal forces. This inner power, in its various reactions to the influences, can only be considered from a mental-spiritual background. The real cause of any illness lies in the disunity of the human mind with the soul. This leads to pathological conditions such as selfishness, hatred, arrogance, etc. When these pathological conditions are more and more reduced, the patient and thus his health will grow. In order to tackle the tendency to get a cold, the tubercular miasm must be treated primarily. (Further literature on the miasms: Ravi Roy’s “Aufbruch ins Bewusstsein – Embarking on Consciousness” from the series “Die Lehre der Heilkräfte – Miasmen – The Doctrine of Healing Powers – Miasms”.)
Just like all other miasms the tubercular stress affects up to the seventh generation. This miasm, in its effect on the body, mainly affects the respiratory tract, producing all kinds of inflammations. Today, it is usually no longer possible to follow-up whether tuberculosis has ever occurred until the seventh generation. But it can be assumed with great certainty that the person inclined to the flu is more or less burdened with it. A true flu prophylaxis is also to assess oneself correctly. And this is precisely what causes the problems for the tuberculinician. Only who knows his weaknesses, can fight against them.
