Mars
Mars stands for our will and our energy. He never gives up. He is the force that keeps us moving forward. Being the God of War, he fights until he has achieved what he wants. If he does not know what he wants, he is not at ease with himself. He needs a motive for action. The motives closest to him are our wishes and ideas. With much energy he tries to realize them for a long time. First one wish, then the next and then the next … However, one day he gets tired – tired of the too short lasting happiness of fulfilled wishes, tired of the disappointments, tired of constant fighting and struggling.
In mythology, this condition is described as captivity in the barrel. A full lunar year, Mars was chained to the solid form of the barrel. He lost more and more strength, cried and screamed. If the messenger of the gods Mercury had not freed him, he would probably have become a picture of misery. This happens to us in an identical manner. We, too, are chained to our craving to fulfil our wishes. We want to give them a solid shape and hold them. As soon as we have realized one wish, the next will soon come up. Symbolically, a new lunar month begins. Our desiring power increases again and the game starts from the beginning – month by month, year by year. We may consider this normal and try to make the best out of it. But how often are we really filled with unrestrained energy, activity and liveliness? How free is Mars actually within us?
Personal desires cannot awaken the power that really lies deep down within us. Only love can do this. It is not for nothing that Mars fights his way through the battlefields during the day, because in the evening, he wants to lie in the arms of the goddess of love Venus. So he never runs out of energy. Venus is the elixir that inspires him and gives him wings. Love is the secret behind every fervent life.
The myth, however, reveals even more. Venus was married to Vulcan, the divine will. Hence, those who unite with love act in harmony with the divine will. By that, pure energy gets released. When you hold love “in your luggage”, nothing is too difficult, nothing is too laborious or costly, nothing unbearable. When Vulcan learned that Venus and Mars were uniting in his marital bed, he tied them together with an invisibly fine, yet indissoluble web. Because of the adultery, he called for the gods and reclaimed in particular all contributed gifts of the bride from the godfather Jupiter. But that was all just a pseudo-revolt. In fact, Vulcan had reached his goal. His divine will and Mars’ human will were now one.
The matured and loving Mars will then be handed over to Neptune to take care of him. Those who experience this change in their lives will experience blessed events. The sea-god Neptune is responsible for extensive currents and big waves. He does not just move individual people, but many at the same time. Through his influence, the effect of our actions expands more and more. Our actions become transpersonal, they serve everyone and permeate everything. Resistances dissolve and things get moving. Afterwards, Mars turns out to be a planet of mercy. The way up to that point leads through love.
Mars and Venus unite the opposites within us. She is the goddess of perfection and he the most imperfect of all gods. Therefore, our greatest potential for development lies in Mars and our greatest opportunity in love. Nothing transforms us faster than love, nothing makes us more courageous, nothing gives us more sense. In order to be able to be a follower of love, Mercury at first releases the Mars within us. We become free of thoughts and desires that neither fulfil nor vitalize us permanently, but “put us on the chain” and exhaust us. Mercury helps us out of the “narrow barrel” of our limited desires. He recognizes the difference between what we want and what we love. We also can easily recognize this difference: are we ready to give everything for something without demanding something back for it? Love does not expect anything, but gives everything. But the wishing one, particularly wants to get and keep something for himself.
Are you ready to fight for what you love, to give everything and also to be able to give up?
