The Gift and Test of Scorpio
The gift of non-identification
Scorpio is the sign of transformation. When something attracts him, it is like a spark that jumps to his inner self, a signal that moves him. Whether it is a person, a group, an idea or whatever, he wants to become one with it and be absorbed in it. As part of this process of fusion he experiences himself as something that is more than himself. He feels the vibration of the common field that transcends him. Performing rituals in togetherness, he tries to evoke this feeling again and again. It touches his innermost core and moves him to go beyond his limits. He is ready to spend all his energy in order to participate in the greater energy flow and to let it flow completely into himself.
To give everything means to hold on to nothing. Personal needs are subordinated to community needs. The Scorpio fights for the common cause. When he gets involved in something, he plunges deep into it. Either all the way or not at all. He has a clear vision of what the common cause should look like. As soon as he identifies with his vision, he takes control of the steering wheel and tries to realise his imagination.
If his vision does not match the others’, friction will occur. This is not a problem, unless he does not want to abandon his idea, i.e. his vision of the common cause. If he sticks to personal intentions, conflicts are inevitable. Would he only swallow his intentions, sooner or later he will “explode”. If he influences others in subtle ways in his direction against their will, they will notice this in the long run and will react with anger. If he lies to himself or to others, this too will not lead to a solution. So, at some point, it will result in a dispute…
This type feels quickly attacked and is ready to fight. In the heat of battle he can become very offensive and hurtful to others. He also tends to look for blame in others. In his way of fighting, some things can break: Trust, partnerships, friendships. If he really wants to come to terms with others, he has to resolve conflicts in other ways.
It needs a motive, even a common vision that everyone wants to agree and follow. One of the special abilities of the Scorpio-type is his access to the collective unconscious, the moving winds and hidden currents of human community. He senses what others want. He senses their movements and intentions as if he could see through them with X-ray eyes. He intuitively grasps the motive that unites all individual currents into one great stream. This stream pulls everyone along and moves them. The only question is whether he can identify himself with this new image.
For this purpose, the Divine Spirit gives him the most magical of all gifts, the gift of non-identification. It lets him look at the new picture like an uninvolved person is watching. This enables him to perceive it as a solution to the conflict, even if it means personal sacrifices for him. During this process, he himself remains completely at peace with himself. He feels the power of the new motive, identifies with it and undergoes a transformation within himself. In this way he rises one step up – out of personal motives into the spirit of the community. With the wings of non-identification he rises to a higher insight, a higher understanding. Like an eagle, he recognises the way to the solution from high above and also foresees its dangers.
If this Scorpio-born person makes his way to a common solution, he can count on the support of others. Then he has won “without a fight”. As if by magic, the conflict resolves itself and everyone follows the magic of the new image.
The test of responsibility
Scorpio is the sign of unification through friction. When people want something different in their relationship with each other, friction and conflict usually occur. The Scorpio-born person likes to hold on to his position. However, the more he is interested in an agreement, the more compliant he becomes. Like that only the forces of all can be formed in a common activity, in which he can later participate. Once an agreement is reached, he feels most comfortable. He identifies with the intention of the community and can use the energy that is released to the benefit of all.
Energy is relationship in action. If energy is lacking, the relationship threatens to break down. Often there is a lack of taking responsibility. Those involved who have decided to work together and have said ‘yes’ to it are responsible for maintaining the relationship and pursuing the common purpose. This requires constant revitalisation through activity. A house that is not renovated falls into disrepair. The same applies to partnership, business and any form of close relationship in general. If tensions and cracks arise in the relationship, the common sustainability must be restored by reunification. Nature tests the extent to which the Scorpio-type does everything in this regard and lives up to his responsibility for the relationship. He would have the ability to do it.
If the Scorpio-born evades his responsibility, be it out of inattention or fear, it is a negative handling of this test. He must neither avoid disharmony nor confrontation. Both are part of a relationship. Disharmony is nature’s reaction to immobility. In this way, nature points out possibilities for change. All life is change, and the Scorpio-born is the one in the zodiac who is allowed to change the most. For him it is not only about the use of energy, but also about his personal change. Any friction with his fellow human beings is an invitation to him to let go something that prevents unification.
In German language, there is a subtle difference between an agreement and a compromise. The latter is more likely to result in a loss. Although an agreement is reached, in the end it has only become a compromise, a kind of a minimum agreement. In Cicero’s time a compromise was still a valuable promise in which all parties voluntarily submitted themselves to the arbitral award of a third party. Whoever did not accept the arbitral award lost a previously deposited pledge. It was therefore worth to all parties involved to open up a common, new perspective. At the same time, the objective judgment of the third party prevented manipulation and deception.
Objectivity is extremely helpful for a Scorpio-born person. If he tries to persuade others by pressure or manipulation to do something they do not really want, this will not lead to a real agreement. Then he should not be surprised if conflicts continue. On the other hand, there is no point in suppressing own needs. Taking responsibility for a relationship means putting all the cards on the table and looking for a common solution to which everyone can freely say “yes”. Otherwise, agreement is only an illusion, undermined by oppressive counterforces and tenses up the common relationship.
Every relationship polarises. Polarisation enables transformation, change and progress. This type should not resist the influences of others. Instead, he should ask himself, “Am I willing to let go and relinquish from my own desires in order to better experience the richness of being together?”
Polarisation provides a necessary mixture of forces. The inner nature does not work through equality and repetition, but through change, renewal and through the charm of the unknown. It wants to change and create something completely new from the community. Creation is the fruit of relationship. If the Scorpio-born refuses this creative activity, he blocks the common energy.
Responsibility requires to take on the burden of the unifying seed. Often it is precisely the Scorpio-born person who starts the process of common activity. If he pursues the interests of the community, the community gladly accepts his impulse as a solution for a new, common path.
The synthesis of gift and testing
Life wants to change and challenge you. Get involved with the charms of life. Especially in close relationships you learn to give more. If you spend all your energies in conflicts, you will lose the game of being together. But if you agree and separate from the incompatible, you will manage the change. Then you will be another person, that you realise deep inside.
